Teen Pregnancy Statistics

Almost half a million teens have children every year. Many of these teens have no idea of the risks involved in a teen pregnancy. This is a common problem and almost every family has a member somewhere down the line who has a young woman that has conceived a child at a young age.

The task of developing another human being in their body at the same time that there body is still developing is a risk young mothers take. Statistics show that a teen mother is 1 1/2 times more likely to have an under weight baby (under 5 1/2 lbs) than a woman 20 years of age or older. The risk of the under weight baby is associated with lower levels of prenatal care in young women.

Low birth weight is fortunately a solvable problem. A young woman who is pregnant needs to be aware of how important early prenatal care is to the health of not only their baby but to their own health as well. Almost half of teen mothers do not receive prenatal care in their first trimester. The reasons for this vary from not accepting the pregnancy to trying to hide the pregnancy at any cost.

Education is highly beneficial to all teens about teen pregnancy and the causes and prevention of pregnancy. Maintaining a healthy diet is also a very important thing for teens to learn about because this is very important in the development of a baby and not only that but their own development. Studies show that pregnant teens that stay in school have an advantage over those who don't. The school setting can be a great support system in the young woman's journey to parenting.

Teen pregnancy can be a positive, learning experience if you stay aware. It is almost impossible for a teen to do this alone. It is important to try to support the teen. This is a very emotional time for not only the teen but also the partner of the teen and the teens' parents and family. Staying educated together and trying to support one another can be the key to happiness and stability.
